Matthieu Venot is a self-taught French photographer who transforms architectural forms into bright, geometric compositions that border on abstract. He was a musician and sound engineer but turned to photography as a creative outlet when the band he played for broke up. Drawn to the colors and geometric elements of the architecture in his hometown Brest, France, Matthieu set out to document his surroundings through his own fresh point of view. He hones in on intriguing angles and graphical elements of urban structures, cropping and recontextualizing buildings into abstract works of art. Clear skies and bright pastels are signature elements of his whimsical photographs, which he captures during midday walks when the sun is at its peak.
Matthieu says, "I like to discover new places, new cities and countries. That’s what draws me to photography – it helps to be open to the world, to go in search of images and discover new places."
