James Gortner
James Gortner was born in Orange County, California and studied in Hawaii before receiving his MFA from Columbia University in 2010. He currently keeps a studio in the MANA Contemporary art space in New Jersey. His works are constellations of people and places he finds seductive: bohemians and fortune tellers in mystic and spiritual settings. To create his mixed media works, he collects pre-existing paintings by other artists, cuts them up, and repurposes them as elements of his own bricolage style. James has exhibited his work internationally and holds an MFA from Columbia University. He lives in Harlem, New York, with his wife and two young sons.
