This master of digital design and 3D rendering creates uncanny, but chic spaces and objects.
Tom Hancocks’ work lives in what he calls the “muddy in-between” of art and design. At first, the virtual objects he depicts look familiar. On closer inspection, they reveal themselves as slightly off, artificial and even impossible. Tom plays with the possibilities and boundaries of 3D rendering; he highlights the smooth perfection and precise geometries that the programs enable, but he also challenges them by making organic or imperfect forms, like a jagged rock or a crackling vase. While his imagined furniture and spaces will inevitably be made real in the near future, it’s not about the physical object for Tom: “...having the finished image is the reward,” he says.
