Why we love this piece

This photograph was captured in the South of France. Matthieu gravitates towards bright, contrasting colors and strong geometric forms that transform architectural structures into abstract works of art.

Matthieu Venot

Matthieu Venot is a self-taught French photographer who transforms architectural forms into bright, geometric compositions that border on abstract. He was a musician and sound engineer but turned to photography as a creative outlet when the band he played for broke up. Drawn to the colors and geometric elements of the architecture in his hometown Brest, France, Matthieu set out to document his surroundings through his own fresh point of view. He hones in on intriguing angles and graphical elements of urban structures, cropping and recontextualizing buildings into abstract works of art. Clear skies and bright pastels are signature elements of his whimsical photographs, which he captures during midday walks when the sun is at its peak.
