Why we love this piece

This work is an aerial view of coffee plantations in Brazil; the title comes from the name of one of the small towns that appear in the photograph. Another interesting aspect of this image is the vertical line that delineates the left and right side. This was formed by a “glitch” in Google Earth where, in some spots, you can actually see how the satellite imagery is formed from a composite of many photographs. In this case, as Federico says, “I used contrast to play up the errors of the program.”

Federico Winer
Born: Buenos Aires, Argentina|

Argentine photographer Federico Winer has spent over two years creating Ultradistancia, a fascinating series based on Google Earth imagery, which depicts our world in a ultramodern way. While Federico also makes more classical photography, this most recent series shows Federico’s interest in blurring the lines between fine art and traditional photography.  His work has been exhibited internationally from Italy and Germany to Thailand and Israel. Additionally, he’s been written up in prominent publications such as The Huffington Post, Gizmodo, Forbes, Vice, and The Atlantic.
