Charles is inspired by the traditional Kuba textiles of central Africa. Charles discovered these textiles as a young artist and was seduced by their abstract patterns, elaborate surfaces and brilliant simplicity.
Upon arriving in Los Angeles in the late 1960s for college, Charles Christopher Hill discovered and became part of an artistic community loosely defined as the “West Coast School.” Hill has been exhibited extensively in museum shows throughout California, such as The Hammer Museum, LACMA, and MoCA, as well as the Guggenheim and MoMA in New York City and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
