Conceptual artist whose color-driven abstract paintings, alongside her performances and publications offer a validation of self-worth.
Anne Sherwood Pundyk paints on many different surfaces including whitewashed pages taken from a published novel. By subsuming the original printed story under her own abstract painted narrative, she mirrors the layered process of identity formation. In the works she made for Twyla, Anne again uses book pages. This time she pairs two open pages from her handwritten journal; the left side showing her reckoning of the day and the right side a corresponding hex-like symbol based on the geometric navigations in her paintings. After digitally scanning these pages she begins an iterative series of manipulations—printing, photographing and re-scanning the images—incorporating inkjet glitches and Photoshop distortions. The works present the high-keyed color palette from her paintings, absorbed into toner droplets, woven threads, cast shadows and refracted light suggesting the quixotic role of time in our self-reflections.

About the Artist.
Anne Sherwood Pundyk is a conceptual artist who makes abstract paintings charged with the essence of her experiences creating collaborative performance and publication projects. She was born in New York City, where she still lives, and has a studio in Mattituck on the North Fork of Long Island. Color narrates the emotion in Anne’s work, which navigates spontaneous paint pourings, written outpourings, and improvised digital imagery using an interplay of open-ended geometric patterns. Anne has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions from New York to Athens, she has performed at MoMA PS1 and created a feminist intervention for the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Her work is in many private and institutional collections including Barclay’s Bank, New York; Luciano Benetton Foundation, Treviso; Marriott International, Inc. and the personal collections of Katie Couric and Cy Twombly.Explore this Artist
